Angie Barry Memorial Scholarship Recipients

2025 – Chloe Phelps

Chloe Phelps, a senior at Topeka West High School, is the proud recipient of the Angie Barry Memorial Scholarship. A dedicated student-athlete and leader, Chloe has earned a varsity letter all four years as a member of the Topeka West cross country team and is also a two-year varsity letter winner in track and field. Her perseverance, commitment, and team spirit have defined her success both on and off the field. Academically, Chloe has excelled throughout her academic career, maintaining a place on the 4.0 Honor Roll every year from middle school through high school. She currently holds an outstanding cumulative GPA of 4.44. Chloe’s hard work and dedication have earned her several honors, including the Karl McFarland Science Scholarship, Junior Charger of the Month, the Martin Luther King Jr. Living the Dream Scholarship, and membership in the National Honor Society. This fall, Chloe will attend Washburn University to pursue a degree in Nursing. With her compassion, leadership, and determination, she is well prepared to make a lasting impact in the healthcare field and her community.

2024 – Caleb Annan-NooNoo

The recipient of the 2024 Angie Barry Memorial Scholarship is Caleb Annan-Noonoo. Caleb is an impressive academic student, ranked first in his class with a 4.41 GPA, and he earned a score of 32 on his ACT. Caleb transferred to Topeka West High School, after attending Pittsburgh High as a freshman. As a 4-year honor roll student, Caleb was a member of the National Honor Society his junior year and serves as treasurer of the NHS as a senior. Earning an academic letter as a sophomore, junior, and senior, Caleb is also a County Honors Scholar and Kansas ACT Scholar. As an underclassman, Caleb participated in soccer, tennis, and track, however, he found confidence in playing basketball, competing for 4 years and appointed team captain as a senior. He plans to continue playing intramural sports in college. Caleb is described by his teachers as highly intelligent with an impressive work ethic, a leader among his peers, and a motivating team member fostering camaraderie and success. He has a strong sense of giving back to the community, working with the youth club at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Caleb is goal oriented, and was in the TCALC Sports Medicine Pathway. He worked as an intern at Stormont Vail and belongs to the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). He plans to attend KU, majoring in Biology, and wants to become an orthopedic surgeon.

2023 – Miles Cusick

The 2023 recipient of the Angie Barry Memorial Scholarship is Miles Cusick.  Miles is an outstanding student, a member of the Topeka West Band, and a member of the Topeka West Tennis team.  All these qualities make him the perfect recipient of the scholarship.  Miles challenged himself academically.  He maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA and a weighted GPA of 4.27. He was a member of the Topeka West Tennis team earning the State Championship Title for Doubles.  Over the four-year period, he was also employed by Kossover Tennis, Panera Bread, and the Topeka Zoo. During the Pandemic, Miles took on a project of a grant opportunity from the Topeka Youth Commission for youth engagement in community service.  He made a pollinator garden with a path and a little free library.  Miles will be attending Kansas State University where he will be in the Honors Program studying Mechanical Engineering.

2022 – Bryanna Mays

Topeka West High School senior, Brynna Mays is a natural leader in all areas of academia, athletics, and numerous campus organizations. As a three-sport athlete, she competed at the varsity level in volleyball and basketball. Brynna is a member of the National Honor Society, the Charger Band, the Spirit Club, the Gifted Program, and served as the Executive Vice President of Student Council. She loves interacting with her peers and motivates her teammates to achieve by being the best they can be. Her belief that “The sky’s your limit” is the driving force in her life, evidenced by her many accomplishments throughout high school. In March, the Topeka Public School District announced Brynna as the Senior of the Month. Brynna was awarded the prestigious Harry Gore Memorial Scholarship at Wichita State University where she will major in Exercise Science or Health Science to become a Physical Therapist to help the community around her.

2021 – Gavin Berberich 

Topeka West High School senior, Gavin Berberich, knows what it takes to be a successful student athlete. Gavin started high school as a two-sport athlete in baseball and golf. In order to excel at the next level, he made the decision to focus on golf. Balancing the demands of his academic classes, his fitness and training requirements, and his part-time employment throughout high school, Gavin learned essential life skills in the areas of time management, practicing a positive attitude, and self-advocating with teachers, coaches, and employers. With hard work and focus, Gavin earned the following athletic achievements: All City Boys Golf, 2nd team as a freshman, 1st Team as sophomore; qualified for 5A State Golf tournaments as a freshman and sophomore. He won the 5A Dodge City Invitational Golf Tournament and the KIGA Golf Tournament at Eagle Bend in Lawrence. Gavin has earned an athletic scholarship to play golf at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS. He will be the first to attend college in his family and plans to major in computer science with game development.

2021 – Ella Teter

At Topeka West High School, Ella is known to be self-driven, goal-oriented, and a responsible team leader who encourages others to work hard and go the extra mile. These qualities partnered with Ella’s love for learning have brought her great success throughout her rigorous courses, sports, various campus groups, and volunteer work. Ella is a 2021 Kansas Honors Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society, serving as Vice President her senior year. She is also involved with the Math Club, and served as a contributing member and Senior Vice President of Spanish Club. Ella competed at the varsity level on the cross country and swimming teams. Always willing to help others, Ella volunteered at the Central Mission Youth Camps, Let’s Help, and was awarded the Capper Foundation Volunteer of the Year, 2021. Ella will attend Iowa State University, majoring in Fashion Merchandising.
